You’ve just got engaged and you are flying high on happiness, skipping about like a spring lamb! You are eager to get on with all the days out, planning, organising and eating various cakes. That is until you are brought down to earth with a huge bump! Because the dreaded “R” word rears it fugly face, I don’t even wana type it, it is so ugly! Do I have to type it? Ok then…. Recession …. (gross gross gross) and then you realise money is now your biggest foe! But fear not! We have a few wee cheats for you to save those pennies, which means you can splash out on that special dress you’ve had your eye on from that magazine you read, that idea for a cake that you seen on that show you watch or the *ahem* photographer you absolutely adore that you found on facebook *ahem..
So what’s the first tip you may ask, well it is this!
Raid your mothers/ mother in law China collections for the reception! No seriously, it looks awesome and the more it doesn’t match the better! It fits the vintage look that is so popular right now & makes the reception more inviting, like sitting down for tea at your Granny’s! The patterns are so numerous & colours are plentiful so it should be easy to find a set or several different sets to match your theme for the day! Also word of warning, if your guests are, shall we say a “raucous crowd”, maybe best not use your Great grandmothers fine bone china, but instead hit your local charity shops! You are sure to find a bargain!
This can also be applied to cutlery! You know those sets of “good cutlery” that your mother and everyone else’s keep in the sideboard and ONLY ever get out for Christmas and special occasions? Well we say use them for your wedding reception! What is more special than that? And you can get all the female relatives & guests involved, they feel like they’ve helped out and been a part of the day! And that “good cutlery” gets some proper use!!
Now for flowers, they can be one of the biggest expenses, or are they?
Instead, go wild! Head out for a country walk a few days before the big day or send your troops out for a scavenging hunt the morning of the union. Wild flowers can vary in colour, size & quantity but can offer a quirky, delicate alternative to the big in your face standard that appears at most other weddings in Northern Ireland, and best of all free! Be careful though that you aren’t taking them from protected areas or special botanical gardens, it would also be a good idea to ask the land owner for permission. We think they look great!
Think outside the box for table decoration, not only wild flowers instead of a bouquet but your place cards can be completely random, here we used scrabble tiles – if you are a board game fanatic it would fit perfect! A wedding should be about the two of you, even down to the tiniest of details, so make everything have your touch and make it your day! Place cards and all!
Hope this was a little useful or at least a little inspiring? Do you have any thrifty ideas or tips that you have picked up? Post them in the comments section, all brides & grooms to be are welcome!
